“Time is running out.” “irreversible catastrophe”

Could we have more drama about the end of the world? The president goes to the U. N. and we have more hype about global warming. Can we have some science to go along with all the end of the world talk? Let’s take some time to actually understand what is going on before we make changes that will undermine the global economy for the sake of a “theory” that is quickly becoming proven false.

It is sad how many people want to make the Swine Flu into the coming Pandemic. There is so much hand wringing and hysterical headlines out there that it frustrates me to no end. Fortunately, I see this more as shameless opportunism rather than people actually wanting to see “millions” die. This latest story from the Guardian reinforces my theory. The UN is now issuing a report saying millions could die if the rich nations do not contribute 900 million Pounds (approx $1.5 Billion) to pay for medicine. This is for a virus that based on the information at the end of the article is lethal in 0.5% of the cases that were confirmed (41 deaths in 8,187 cases). This is in Africa where the health care system is worse than the rest of the developed world. So, if millions will die, then billions will need to get infected. To reach that level of infection, nearly one in six of all people IN THE WORLD would have to get infected.

So far, I have not seen anything in the reality of the swine flu numbers to make me think this is anywhere near likely.

Everywhere you tune into the news these days, you see or hear or read more and more hype about how bad things are. No matter what it is, the problem is the worst there is and MUST BE SOLVED NOW. Of course, this gets viewers for TV and votes in politics. However, it is getting out of control and the spin is insane. So in honor of the out of control hype, I am starting an ongoing series of posts (inspired by Patterico) pointing out the END OF THE WORLD ….. (not really) stuff that pops up.

When I started today, I planned on starting this series talking about the Swine Flu hysteria that is spiraling up as flu season approaches. The endless press releases on the flu, to Elmo, everyone is acting like this is the coming plague. I have yet to be sold. However, I saw something today that illustrated everything that I am thinking about the over the top things going on out there.

The UN has a Doomsday Vault for seeds. Yes, that is right. The UN has a Doomsday Vault for SEEDS. According to Ban Ki-moon, “The world faces many daunting challenges today, one of the greatest of which is how to feed a growing population in the context of climate change”. So climate change is so bad that we have to build a climate controlled bunker with airlocks to save the planet? Somehow I don’t think we are quite at the building an ark stage, and yet the people putting this story out there see it as accepted. We have a long way to go but I don’t think we are doomed yet. Even though the powers that be seem to want us to think the apocalypse is coming, soon.
